Suicide most often occurs when stressors and mental health issues come together to create an experience of hopelessness, helplessness and despair. Depression is the most common condition associated with suicide, and it is often undiagnosed or untreated. Conditions like depression, anxiety, and substance-related problems, especially when unaddressed, increase the risk of suicide.

Survivor’s guilt is a response to an event in which someone else experienced loss but you did not. While the name implies this to be a response to the loss of life, it could also be the loss of property, health, identity or a number of other things that are important to people.

According to WWF, some 1.1 billion people worldwide lack access to water, and a total of 2.7 billion find water scarce for at least one month of the year. Inadequate sanitation is also a problem for 2.4 billion people and they are exposed to diseases such as cholera, typhoid, fever and other water-borne illnesses. Two million people, mostly children, die each year from diarrheal diseases alone. At the current consumption rate, this situation will only get worse. By 2025, two-thirds of the world’s population may face water shortages.

Since the 1950s, over 9 billion tons of plastic have been produced globally. The production has increased over the years because the popularity has grown with the passage of time. However, this massive production of plastic has led to massive dumps as well. Over 6.3 billion tons of plastic waste have been generated and only 9% have been recycled. The rest of the plastic waste ends up being dumped in landfills or even as litter in the environment. I don’t have to paint a picture of local gutters being stuffed full of plastic bags.

I went home and asked Ibrahim which one was him. He said the black child is Ibrahim. My heart just sank! He hates himself! Black is his least favourite colour. Moreover, the whole narrative of ‘our’ women and ‘their’ women eventually portray women as chattels for transactions in both communities. Women are boxed and categorized as lesser beings who cannot think for themselves and can be easily manipulated. Instead of empowering women to engage with the real world with confidence and Islamic values, it plays on the assumption that women are gullible, they know little of the outside world, and men must continuously monitor and control them. Such a weaponization of the fears of concerned Muslim parents enables and sanctions undue restrictions on Muslim women, such as limiting their access to education, life opportunities, and their ability to learn, reflect and understand.
