Startup fundraising in SoutheastAsia plummeted to a little over $2 billion in the first quarter of this year, hitting a two-year low.

The funding decline in Indonesia, the region’s largest consumer market, was particularly precipitous. Deal value in Q1 this year dropped to less than half that recorded in the same period of 2022. In fact, Thailand surpassed Indonesia for the first time in total private funding secured in the quarter.

Southeast Asia presents an exciting growth opportunity for over-the-top (OTT) service providers with its large population, growing middle class and increasing internet penetration. According to some estimates, users in the region stream more than eight billion hours of OTT content per month, representing a large captive audience.

Local, Asian and global players, however, have to contend with multiple challenges, including high price sensitivity, in the region. Converting this audience into paying customers, therefore, is a tricky matter. How are different players, including Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, Vidio and Viu, approaching this conundrum? What success have they met with so far? Is there a dark horse in this race that we should watch out for? How does local content fare against international productions in terms of driving subscriptions? Our latest report has the answers to all these questions and more.

Five Southeast Asia-focused PE funds held a final close in the second half of 2022, collecting $1.96 billion between them.

The H2 performance was not enough to make up for a complete lull in the first half of last year. As a result, the year ended a billion dollars short of 2021's eye-watering $2.97 billion haul.

With the exception of China, where a $3.1b mega deal propped up deal value, startup fundraising was muted across Asia in Feb.

In India, fundraising fell 25% MoM to $866m, while SE Asian startups raised $409m, down 44% from Jan.

Deal volume, too, was down in both regions. China, however, bucked the trend as startups raised $6.7b in Feb—up 23.1% MoM and the highest since Sept 2022—from 222 deals.
