The Overlooked Commandment: Dutifulness to Parents

In Islām, after worshiping Allāh alone, one of the greatest deeds is being dutiful to our parents. Caring for our parents isn’t just an act of kindness; it’s a form of worship that can lead directly to the pleasure of Allāh. The Prophet ﷺ said:

"The pleasure of the Lord is in the pleasure of the parent, and the displeasure of the Lord is in the displeasure of the parent." Sunan Tirmidhī

Sometimes, in our zeal to pursue acts of worship that are grand—seeking knowledge, activism, building organisations for Da'wah, fasting, or public charity—we overlook one of the simplest and most profound forms of worship: serving and honoring our parents.

How often do we pause to realise that caring for our parents when they are in need is like a door to Jannah wide open before us? So let us not neglect this command in the pursuit of other deeds especially when they are in need. Helping our parents is not only a duty; it’s a way to bring Allāh’s mercy into our own lives.

Their Love For Us is A Sign of Allāh’s Mercy in This World.

Action Plan:

Dear brothers and sisters,
If your parents call upon you, respond to them with urgency.
If they are in need, let nothing hold you back from supporting them.
If they are old and frail, serve them with tenderness, as they once served you in your helplessness.
If they are no longer with you, honor their memory with prayers, charity, and the fulfillment of their wishes.

O seeker of Allāh's mercy, never underestimate the weight of this responsibility. It is not a burden; it is a blessing. It is not a distraction from worship; it is worship itself. When you serve your parents, you are serving Allāh.

May Allāh grant us the ability to fulfill this noble duty with sincerity, love, and excellence. Amīn

Backbiting [Ghībah] The Worst Type of Generosity

Imām Ibn Taymīyyah said:

"The worst type of generosity is being generous in gifting your good deeds to others due to backbiting, tale-carrying, lying, swearing and insulting [the believers]."

See Majmoū Fatāwa [8/303]

I will mention some harms of backbiting on a societal and individual level:

Societal harms:

❖ It breaks the bond of brotherhood and creates disunity.
❖ Spreads envy, dislike, and hatred among the Muslims in the community.
❖ It spreads the practice of backbiting in the community.
❖ People’s privacies get exposed, spreads their faults and belittles them.
❖ The community start focusing on others instead of themselves.

Individual harms:

❖ The one who backbites is bankrupt on the Day of Resurrection.
❖ Increases bad deeds and decreases good ones.
❖ Leads to punishment in the grave.

Action Plan:

❖ Focus on yourself.
❖ Seek forgiveness for your fellow Muslims.
❖ Have a good opinion of your brother.

How Much Do You Remember Allāh Daily?

Qur’ān: Allāh says,

“Surely in the remembrance of Allāh do hearts find comfort"

Sūrah Ar-Ra'd: 28

Spiritual Development: Imām Ibn Taymīyyah said:

“Dhikr [Remembrance of Allāh] is to the heart as water is to a fish; see what happens when a fish is taken out of water!”

See Al-Wābil As-Sayyib [p.63].

Practical steps to remember Allāh on a daily basis:

1 - Incorporate Dhikr into daily tasks like commuting or cooking.

2 - Set fixed times each day for focused remembrance of Allāh.

3 - Use phone reminders or apps to help keep up with daily Dhikr.

4 - Start now with this Dhikr which is light on the tongue, heavy on the Scale and beloved to Allāh:

سُبْحَانَ اللهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ ، سُبْحَانَ اللهِ الْعَظِيْم

“Allāh is free from imperfection and all praise is due to Him, Allāh is free from imperfection, the Greatest.”
