Jujutsu is a Japanese martial arts family whose name translates to “gentle art” — “ju” means “soft/supple/gentle” and “jutsu” means “art/technique”.
The most widely acknowledged version of jujutsu’s origins dates back to late 16th century Japan, during the reign of the samurai – Japan’s military class that wielded major political influence between the 12th and nineteenth centuries. Sambo is a combat sport established by the Soviet Red Army in the 1920s to help soldiers improve their hand-to-hand combat skills. Aikido is a variation of jujutsu. It was developed by martial artist Morihei Ueshiba in the early twentieth century, making it one of Japan’s youngest martial systems.
