Rice is a staple food for about half of the world’s population, with Asia consuming about 90% of global supply.
🍚India'sRice export ban: Why India is so crucial to global rice trade ?
🔰Recently, The Indian government prohibited the export of non-basmati white ricewith immediate effect.
🔰Earlier, the Government has already imposed restrictions on wheat and sugar exports.
🔰In September 2022, government banned the exports of broken rice and imposed a 20% duty on exports of various grades of rice.
🔍Reason for the Rice Ban
1️⃣Erratic monsoon
Indian farmers plant paddy rice twice in a year.
Summer-sown crop planting starting in June accounts for more than 80% of the total output, which was 135.5 million tons in the 2022/23 crop year. In winter months, paddy rice is mainly cultivated in central and southern states.
The late arrival of the monsoon led to a large rain deficit up to mid-June. And while heavy rains since the last week of June have erased the shortfall, they have caused significant damage to crops. The area under paddy could drop marginally in 2023 because of erratic monsoon rainfall distribution.
2️⃣ Attempt to curb domestic inflation owing to rise in domestic prices -the retail price of the grain climbed about 15% in Delhi this year while the average nationwide price gained more than 8%.
3️⃣The Centre’s decision comes following tardy progress in paddy showing, which was 8.5 per cent lower than last year at 122.18 lakh hectares (lh) as of July 14.
4️⃣ Rice stocks with the Central pool maintained by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) dropped to a seven-year low of 25.34 million tonnes(mt)
🔍What about the countries which relied on India for it's food security ?
Shipments will be allowed on the basis of permission granted by the government to other countries to meet their food security needs and based on request of their governments.
🔍Why India is crucial to the global rice trade ?
♻️India, the world’s largest rice exporter, accounts for 40% of the global rice trade, with its shipments going to about 140 countries.
♻️ India's rice shipments in 2022 were more than the combined shipments of the Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan and the US, the next four big exporters of the grain.
♻️India exported 17.86 million tons of non-basmati rice in 2022.
♻️However, Indian government has not put any restrictions on the export of basmati rice which stood at 4.4 million tons in 2022. Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia mainly buy premium basmati rice from India.
♻️The ban could reduce rice exports from India by at least 40 per centof the over 17 million tonnes of non-basmati rice shipments in the last two fiscal years.

Recently, Rajasthan government passed the Rajasthan Platform Based Gig Workers (Registration and Welfare) Bill, 2023.
It is the first legislation of its kind in India outlining welfare schemes for the State’s approximately three lakh gig workers.
Key Takeaways
1. Creation of Welfare Board - comprising State officials, five representatives each from gig workers and aggregators, and two others from civil society.
2. Creation of Social Security and Welfare Fund - comprising contributions made by individual workers, State government aids, other sources and a ‘welfare cess’ — a cut from each transaction — which the aggregator is required to pay.
3. Duties of aggregators - depositing welfare cess on time, updating the database of gig workers, and documenting any variations in numbers within one month of such changes.
